Cameroon lure Joel Matip out of international exile

Cameroon hoping to lure Liverpool defender Joel Matip out of international exile in time for Africa Cup of Nations. The defender has been excellent since signing for Liverpool in the summer and Cameroon boss Hugo Broos is planning talks about a potential return ahead of the tournament.He missed Sunday's 4-3 defeat to Bournemouth as Liverpool lost for just the second time this season. Matip hasn’t played for the Indomitable Lions since 2015 and is committed to staying with the Reds rather than taking part in next month’s Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, reports the Liverpool Echo. Cameroon boss Hugo Broos intends to hold talks with Matip about a potential return to the fold. “When I took over as coach I went to see him in Gelsenkirchen and ask him to return to the team,” Broos told Belgium’s Voetbal Magazine. “But he said to me ‘nothing is organised properly in Cameroon’. “I asked him to give me a chance to prove that we could do it better but he was not convinced. “But in the meantime I’ve heard that he is now prepared to make a comeback and so I am going to go and see him again.” Matip returned to training with Liverpool on Tuesday after missing Sunday’s 4-3 defeat to Bournemouth with an ankle injury. The defender is set to return to Jurgen Klopp’s side for Sunday’s visit of West Ham.
